The Speaker of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mussa Azzan Zungu, has been elected President of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Zungu was nominated by the Speaker of the United Kingdom House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, on October 6, 2026, during a meeting of the IPU Governing Council held at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC).
The nomination was supported by the Speaker of the United Arab Emirates and the Parliament of Uganda.
In presenting his nomination, Sir Lindsay Hoyle said he was honoured to nominate Tanzania’s Speaker, citing their long-standing and deeply rooted friendship.
Zungu thanked the delegates for their support and said he had accepted the responsibility wholeheartedly.
Meanwhile, IPU President and former Speaker of the Parliament of Tanzania, Dr. Tulia Ackson, congratulated Zungu on his election as President of the 153rd IPU Assembly.
