The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) in Singida Region has launched a special operation to track down and take stern action against individuals involved in vandalizing electricity infrastructure and stealing power.
As part of the operation, TANESCO has disconnected electricity supply to a house in the Minga area of Singida after it was found to have been illegally connected to the grid through unlicensed technicians, commonly known as vishoka.
Speaking during the operation, TANESCO Singida Regional Revenue Controller, Engineer Lugano Mwakinyala, said the crackdown also targets stopping residents from making unauthorized power connections through informal electricians.
“Following the discovery, we have disconnected the house from the power supply because the installed meter is not recognized in our system,” Mwakinyala stated.
On his part, TANESCO’s Revenue Inspector, Augustino Shirima, revealed that those who connected electricity to the house had used methods allowing power to flow directly without being recorded by the installed meter.
He urged the public to use TANESCO’s official Nikonekt service for safe, quick, and legitimate electricity applications instead of resorting to illegal means that endanger both lives and property.
TANESCO has vowed to continue the operation across all districts in Singida Region until acts of sabotage and electricity theft are completely eliminated.
End.
