Deputy General Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Felister Mdemu, has called on Gender Desk Coordinators in public spaces to act responsibly and ensure justice is served in order to build a safe society free from acts of violence.

Felister made the remarks while officially opening a capacity-building workshop for Gender Desk Coordinators in public areas in Tabora Region on June 12, 2025. The training brought together participants from the regions of Tabora, Songwe, and Rukwa.

"We will only eradicate these acts of violence if we all speak with one voice. I urge you all to act justly—everyone should recognize that the responsibility to fight against violence lies with them," emphasized Deputy Permanent Secretary Felister.

She added that communities need to be informed and encouraged to report gender-based violence to Gender Desk officers stationed at police stations, bus terminals, as well as to Social Welfare Officers located in local councils and ward offices.

Meanwhile, Tabora Regional Administrative Secretary, Dr. John Mboya, commended the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups for being at the forefront in responding swiftly and effectively whenever violence-related challenges arise.

"We are all witnesses to the Ministry’s commitment. Whenever we approach them with an issue, they respond promptly, and we manage to resolve it without unnecessary delays," stated Dr. John.

He further urged men not to feel ashamed of using the gender desks to report violence, as these desks are now accessible even in public areas.

Earlier, while delivering a message on behalf of the Ministry, Assistant Director of the Gender Development Department, Rennie Gondwe, noted that the Government has made significant efforts to eliminate acts of violence within communities. Among these efforts is the establishment of Gender Desks in various locations.

Through the Gender Development Department, the Ministry has expanded the reach of Gender Desks, having established a total of 238 desks in markets across 19 regions. These are already operational, and ongoing training is being provided to ensure effective management of the desks. The ultimate goal is for society to unite in speaking out against violence, refusing to tolerate or perpetrate it.
